Choosing Duvet Covers

Most people, when they go shopping for a duvet cover, are thinking about style and color more than they are about quality. However, a high quality duvet cover will last longer and serve you better than one that's more cheaply made. In fact, if you're an allergy sufferer, getting the correct duvet cover can even improve your health.

A duvet cover protects your comforter or duvet from dirt, stains, and bad smells. It's easier to wash than the comforter itself, and keeps your comforter in good shape longer. One popular fabric for duvet covers is cotton, since it's machine washable and doesn't degrade easily. A high quality cotton duvet cover can look like it's new for many years.

So, how can a new duvet cover help you with your allergies? If you're sensitive to the chemicals used to process many fabrics, your current bedding might be making your symptoms worse. Chemical free duvet covers can reduce your exposure to allergens and give you a more restful sleep. If you've been waking up with irritated eyes and throat or a runny nose, or feeling itchy from the chemicals in your bedding, look for allergen-free duvet covers to help you with this problem.

People who are sensitive to dust can also benefit from a non-allergen duvet cover. Some forms of chemical free and allergen reducing bedding can keep dust mites out of the bed, giving you fewer sources of irritation. Silk is a particularly good material for a duvet cover that you'd like to use for this purpose. It's naturally hypoallergenic, in addition to having a luxurious feel, and provides excellent insulating properties.

Duvet covers can be purchased alone or as part of a set. Duvet cover sets tend to come with two pillow shams, but may also include a fitted sheet. Since duvets are usually used by themselves – without any sheets or other blankets, you're unlikely to find a duvet cover set will include a top sheet. Buying your duvet cover and shams as a set will save you money, since they usually cost less when sold together. You'll also be able to find a matching set more easily.

No matter what type of duvet cover you choose, make sure the one you buy is of high quality. Look for natural materials over synthetics, since they'll be more likely to insulate effectively, keeping you warmer on cold nights. Strong stitching and the ability to hold up in the laundry are other characteristics of a good duvet cover.

Many people will struggle for long periods of time to get their duvet covers on the first few times. However, there are some thing you can do to make the process easier. Lay your duvet out across your bed, and turn the cover inside out. Put your hands inside the cover, and grab the two corners furthest away from the opening. Take hold of the top corners of the duvet. Then, lift the two, and shake them to make th cover fall down over the duvet. This should allow you to place your duvet inside its cover with a minimum of trouble.
