Pedaling Along; Are Bikes More Popular Today

Bikes have been around for several years. Since their invention in the 19th century, more people are riding bikes than can be counted. The bicycle consists of two wheels, pedals, and hand or foot brakes. This is the basic model. More options are available as the bike became more popular for transportation.

Children’s bikes are the same configuration except they come with removable training wheels that are used until they learn how to ride. This usually does not take very long and once the wheels are removed, they resemble your basic bicycle, only smaller.

Bikes have become a very popular mode of transportation as the gasoline prices rise. They are easier to maneuver around busy streets and can actually get you where you are going faster than a car. This is due to the fact that you can work your way around traffic jams and accidents when riding a bike. Instead of being stuck in traffic, you are on your way to your destination.

Bikes come in a wide variety of models and colors. The mountain bike is made especially for climbing steep mountain trails. The tires on these types of bicycles are different than regular bike tires. They are wider and have rough tires that are better suited for gripping the more rugged trails. The tires also provide better shock absorption than regular bike tires.

Another great reason so many people are beginning to ride bikes is for the exercise. This is one great way to get fit. Along with dieting many people use bike riding as their exercise. Riding in the evening or first thing in the morning, the workout this provides is one of the best ways to work out your entire body. Pedaling works the legs and back. This is especially good if you include inclines as part of your bike ride.

Stationary bikes are also used for this purpose. They are made basically the same as a regular bike but the wheels are suspended so that the bike does not move. Some have counters so you can see how many miles a day you have pedaled.

In many cities police use bicycles to make their rounds. The bikes are more maneuverable when used around big cities. They are far easier to use to chase a suspect that is on foot. When they seem to disappear down an alley or through a back yard, a police cruiser may have a hard time following. A bicycle can go anywhere they go.

Bike races are becoming more popular. The racing bike is a little more spiffed up than the ordinary bike. They normally are the lightest type of bike for increasing the speed. The gears are set up for racing and the bike uses front suspension. The braking may be enhanced for more braking power.

In times past, the bicycle was one of the most wished for items. For Christmas, birthdays, and just because they wanted one, most children wanted a bike. With the invention of Playstation, Nintendo, and Xbox, the wish list changed. However, more people are getting back into bike riding today. The bike may be topped for a while however; it is still one of the most popular items for children and adults today.
